Traveling with your pet is a wonderful experience, but it requires the right preparation. Whether you travel by car, train or plane, good planning helps reduce stress and makes the journey as comfortable as possible for both you and your furry friend. In this blog, we share essential tips for a safe and relaxing trip with your dog or cat.

1. Preparation: What do you need?

Good preparation is half of a smooth trip! Make sure you have the following items at hand during your trip:

  • Passport & Vaccinations – Check that your pet has the necessary vaccinations and take their pet passport with you. For travel within the EU, a chip is also mandatory.
  • Travel Crate or Carrier – Choose a sturdy, comfortable crate or carrier that allows your pet plenty of room to move around.
  • Food & Water – Your four-legged friend gets hungry and thirsty too! Make sure you provide yourself with a good travel bottle for on the road and snacks.
  • First Aid Kit – Handy for minor accidents; also take medication in case your pet needs it.
  • Toys & Blanket – A familiar toy or blanket helps your pet feel safe.
  • 6Poop Bags or Litter Box – Don't forget something to catch your pet's needs on the go.

2. Traveling by car

Cars are often the easiest way to travel with your pet, but safety is paramount. Pay attention to these things when you go away with your pet:

  • Safety First – Use a seat belt or travel crate to prevent accidents. Never let your pet run loose in the car.
  • Keep the Car Cool – Provide adequate ventilation and never park in the sun. Never leave your pet alone in a hot car!
  • Regular Breaks – Try to stop every 2-3 hours to let your dog out and give them water. Cats can benefit from short breaks in a safe, enclosed space.
  • No Head Out the Window – This may seem fun and look nice in videos, but it can be dangerous due to flying rocks or drafts.

3. Travelling by public transport

In many countries, pets are allowed to travel on public transport for free or for a small fee. Check in advance to be sure what the rules are.

  • Rules by Country – Check the transport rules of train and bus companies. In the Netherlands, for example, small dogs and cats can travel for free in a bag, larger dogs must have a ticket.
  • Use a Travel Carrier – On trains and buses, cats and small dogs are often required to travel in a carrier or crate.
  • Keep Calm – Make sure your pet is used to busy environments and practice with short rides beforehand. Some animals react very badly to this :(
  • Dog Leash – If your dog is large enough to travel outside of a bag, keep him on a leash at all times.

4. Flying with your pet

Flying with a pet requires a little extra preparation. Some airlines allow small pets in the cabin, while larger animals must be transported in the cargo hold.

  • Check the Airline – Each airline has different rules, so check the conditions well in advance.
  • Cabin or Cargo Hold? – Small pets (up to 8 kg including bag) are sometimes allowed in the cabin with several airlines, larger animals must be in a ventilated travel crate in the cargo hold.
  • Sedatives? – Do not give your pet sedatives without consulting your vet, as this can be dangerous during the flight.
  • Plan Early – Book your flight early and register your pet in advance. Some airlines have a limit on the number of pets per flight.

5. Overnight stay with your pet

  • Pet Friendly Hotels & Airbnbs – Check if your accommodation allows pets and if there are any additional fees. This can vary greatly from country to country
  • Own Blanket & Basket – Bring something that smells like home to help your pet feel more comfortable.
  • Dog walking areas – Find out in advance where you can walk your dog near your accommodation.

6. Tips for a stress-free trip

  • Practice short trips - Get your pet used to traveling by taking short trips before longer journeys.
  • Avoid busy travel times - Quiet times are less stressful for pets.
  • Do not feed immediately before departure - This prevents motion sickness.

Conclusion

Traveling with your pet requires some extra preparation, but with the right planning it will be an unforgettable experience for both you and your four-legged friend. Make sure you have a safe travel basket, enough breaks and always check the rules of your vehicle. With these tips you and your pet can go on an adventure together without a care in the world!
